Starting Test Automation
This course introduces test automation. We start by looking at the benefits and pitfalls of the different types of tools that support testing and where in the software development lifecycle they are applicable. We explore common objectives for tool support in testing and when tools are an appropriate solution and how the benefits of tools can be measured. Then we consider strategies for choosing and introducing a test tool and go on to look at the reasons why having a test execution automation tool is not in itself sufficient to automate testing. Finally, highlights from a number of case studies from a variety of backgrounds including the lessons learnt and benefits achieved.

Automating Test Execution Successfully
This course provides a detailed look at some of the most important issues of test execution automation. We explore the pros and cons of different scripting techniques and types of automated comparison, and offer practical advice on how some comparisons can be implemented. The test automation requirements for testware architecture are explained and an approach to the implementation of testware architecture is described. The importance of automating set-up and clearup tasks together with a few approaches to implementation is discussed. Finally, the issue of testware maintenance and how to minimise it is discussed.
